When Cora attends her sister’s birthday party, she expects at most a hangover or a walk of shame. She doesn’t anticipate a stolen wallet, leaving her stranded and dependent on Dean—her arch nemesis and ultimate thorn in her side.
And she really doesn’t anticipate waking up in shackles in a madman’s basement.
To make matters worse, Dean shares the space in his own set of chains.
After fifteen years of teasing, insults, and practical jokes, the ultimate joke seems to be on them. The two people who always thought they’d end up killing each other must now work together if they want to survive.
But Cora and Dean have no idea their abductor has a plan for them. A plan that will alter the course of their relationship, blur the line between hate and love, and shackle them together with far more than just chains.
Before I get into my review some trigger warnings for kidnapping, rape, murder.
If I could sum up this book in two words I'd say heart wrenching.
The story is told in alternating point of views from Cora and Dean.
Cora is attending her sister's birthday party one night. When everyone decides to leave she stays but when she does try to leave discovers her wallet is missing. She tries to call multiple people to help her get home but the only one who responds is her sister's fiancee Dean.
Dean comes to her rescue, much to her disdain. See Cora hates Dean. He has picked on her relentlessly for fifteen years. On their way home they are abducted by a psychopath and locked in a basement.
While in the basement they are subjected to horrible torment. They begin to depend on each other.
I swear I think I cried through half of this book. Maybe I'm just emotional but this story really got to me. The two main characters are placed in an impossible situation.
A little bit of a spoiler though so read on at your own risk.
Ok they do get free of the hellish basement but the story does not end there. They now have to navigate life post trauma.
Cora's sister infuriated me. She doesn't seem to understand what they both went through. She seems to think after three weeks they can just go back to normal. But there is no normal anymore.
So I'm going to give this one 5/5 stars 🤩
It's been a long time since I read anything so heartbreaking.
