It's really going to be hard to narrow things down but I'm going to try! Let's break it down for ya! Not all of these books were written in 2023. These are the books I personally read this year. My opinion is my own so if you didn't like that's ok by me!
I'm going to start with my favorite of the year:

Anyone who knows me knows this is my favorite of the year. I have literally recommended this novel to everyone I know. A lot of people enjoyed it but a few probably didn't but again it's all in how you look at it. I for one did not see the twist coming at all. There are very few books that I have to pause, go back and reread cause I had to have missed something. If you are looking for a domestic thriller or mystery with a twist you won't see coming this is your book. If you've read it and want to let me know what you think feel free to comment ☺️

The next novel that I want to talk about that I want to say is the most shocking that I read this year is:

This was my first read by this author and certainly will not be my last although it's definitely not for everyone. The book jumps right into the action. It's thrilling and disturbing all at the same time. I've never in my life had to put a book down just to clear my head and breathe before. Some of the scenes were almost too much for me but I still really enjoyed it. If you're looking for a really really messed up book have a go. But don't say I didn't warn you.

The sequel I didn't know I needed:

This is the sequel to her hit "the good child". If you haven't read "the good child" I highly recommend it as well. For anyone who read it it does give you closure. It's a very short story but I can't leave my girl Lucinda Berry off of here. Using her knowledge of psychology makes her books intense. I loved finding out what happened to Janie.

The book that was made into a Netflix series that I loved:

Although the Netflix show wasn't as good as the book (most always the case) I still watched it.
This book right here may make you uncomfortable. Lots of trigger warnings for graphic violence and captivity. But the story is well plotted and engaging. One of my favorites!

My favorite "maid" books:

I can't pick between these two. I can go back and forth to try but it's not happening. Both these authors are great. Both stories are engaging and hard to put down. They each have their unique ways. You can't go wrong if you pick up either of them.

The books with the characters you most hate and want to get what's coming to them:

Again this is a tie for my favorite. In one you have a "friend" and I use that term so so loosely who I hated through the entire book. In the other you have a terrible mother who has no redeeming qualities. If you wanna see if the baddies get what's coming to them read either one of these.

Not my favorite but still has to be on the list:

Homelessness check, spousal abuse check, attempted suicide check. All this made for an interesting read. Things may not be as they seem through. You'll have to read to find out.

I can't leave out Riley Sager:

When you have 90s nostalgia and a serial killer how can you go wrong? This book made me feel claustrophobic. Most of the novel is told during a car ride. This is before cell phones were a thing. Trapped in a car with a stranger with no phone. Definitely worth a read.

My favorite dysfunctional family:

What happens when you buy a murder house and don't know it? Would you obsess like the woman in this book? I know I certainly would. Wouldn't you question everything?? Your husband wants you to let things go, your mother in law treats you like trash. What kind of family is this anyway?

The book that I had completely figured out until I didn't:

Not only is the main character being gaslighted in this book but I feel like I was too. This book lays it all out but then flips the script. If you want a book that you think you can figure out but it will surprise you try this one.

An island story:

If you cross Survivor with Lord of the Flies you get this book. This I picked on a whim and thoroughly enjoyed. Isolation will do terrible things to some people. Bonds will be made and broken. If you want a last man standing book check this one out.

A deep dive into psychopathy:

If you've ever wondered what it's like being a psychopath this one's for you. Told in multiple perspectives as well as throwing in a blog and "SET" talk. You'll be wondering if you've got a little bit of a psychopath in you by the end.
